Greater Western Sydney defender Nathan Wilson was one of three Giants to request an AFL trade on Thursday.

Wilson's manager informed the club he wants to play for Fremantle, to be closer to his Western Australian family, while Devon Smith and Matthew Kennedy are seeking greater playing opportunities.

"We are sympathetic to Nathan's situation and we understand Devon and Matt's wish to explore opportunities during the trade period," Giants football boss Wayne Campbell said.

"We'll now work with the respective players and their managers to arrive at the most appropriate outcome."

Wilson, who is contracted to the end of next season, played in the Giants' first AFL match in 2012 after he was taken as one of the eligible 17-year-olds available to the fledgling club.

The 24-year-old has gone on to play 77 senior games and establish himself as a damaging rebounding defender with elite speed and efficiency by foot.

Dockers list manager Brad Lloyd confirmed his club had been notified of Wilson's intention to play for them from next season.

Smith also played in the club's inaugural AFL game, a 63-point loss to Sydney, after he was the 14th overall selection at the 2011 draft.

He has played 109 games for GWS but was left out of the preliminary final side, coach Leon Cameron preferring to go with now-retired veteran Steve Johnson.

Smith played his junior football for Geelong Falcons, with Geelong, Carlton and Collingwood thought to be the front-runners to trade for him.

Kennedy, 20, is a product of the club's development academy and was taken with the No.13 pick at the 2015 draft.

He has played 19 games in two seasons and is understood to be interested in a move to Carlton.

Former Fremantle utility Tendai Mzungu has announced his retirement after playing four games in his lone season for GWS.
