Opener Kraigg Brathwaite and Roston Chase dragged the West Indies to 4-141 after the top order collapsed on the second day of the third Test against Pakistan on Monday.
Brathwaite completed his 12th test half century and was unbeaten on 55 while Chase looked composed on 43 at tea with West Indies losing only Jermaine Blackwood (23) in the second session.
Both batsmen hit six fours each and have put on 73 runs for the fourth-wicket, lifting the West Indies from a precarious 4-68.
West Indies still trail by 140 runs after Pakistan was bowled out for 281 in their first innings, with 19-year-old fast bowler Alzarri Joseph (2-57) claiming the last two wickets in one over with the second new ball.
West Indies ran into early trouble when Wahab Riaz had Leon Johnson leg before wicket in his second over and then combined with Mohammad Amir to shake the confidence of in-form Darren Bravo.
Both left-arm seamers brilliantly setup Bravo with a barrage of short pitched deliveries before the left-hander threw away his wicket.
Bravo tried to break the shackles and loft spinner Zulfiqar Babar over mid-off but sliced to Amir, who held on to a two-handed diving catch while running backwards from covers. It was Amir's first catch in his 20th test.
Leg spinner Yasir Shah then had Marlon Samuels lbw without scoring to reduce West Indies to 3-38 before Amir had Blackwood caught at gully after the break.
