Windies teenager fires - in WBBL

A West Indian cricketer has finally fired in Australia - in the Women's Big Bash League tournament for Hobart.

A West Indian cricketer has finally fired in Australia.

Sadly for the once great Windies men's team, the player in question is featuring in the Women's Big Bash League.

Teenager Hayley Matthews has helped Hobart Hurricanes (6-1 record) keep top spot on the WBBL by thrashing a stunning 77 in their 30-run win over Melbourne Stars at Sydney's Blacktown International Sportspark on Sunday.

Relishing a promotion to opener, the 17-year-old Matthews bludgeoned 14 boundaries in an impressive 51-ball knock to help guide the Hurricanes to 6-144 off their 20 overs.

Hobart's first innings tally was the biggest of the inaugural WBBL to date.

Hobart are on top after a whirlwind 13 games across the league in three days.

The Hurricanes' only loss came on Saturday when they split their two games at Blacktown against Perth (5th; 3-3).

Brisbane Heat (2nd; 6-4) split their Sunday games, downing Sydney Thunder by 14 runs after earlier becoming Melbourne Renegades' maiden scalp, going down by seven wickets.

The second-last Renegades (1-4) snapped a four-game losing run with the upset Gabba win over Brisbane.

Renegades allrounders Danielle Wyatt (4-13) and Dane van Niekerk (4-30) set up the boilover.

Earlier on Sunday, English import Sarah Taylor (71 not out off 46 balls) guided early title favourites Adelaide Strikers (6th; 1-4) to their maiden WBBL win, a six-wicket victory over Sydney Thunder (4th; 3-2) in Brisbane.

Billed as one of the biggest WBBL signings, wicketkeeper Taylor finally lived up to the hype by striking eight boundaries as she carried her bat to help Adelaide reel in Thunder's 6-148 with an over to spare.

Ellyse Perry's dead-last Sydney Sixers (1-6) also notched their maiden victory on Sunday, triumphing by five wickets over Perth at the SCG.

The Sixers' South African import Marizanne Kapp claimed 3-9 to reduce the Scorchers to just 8-107.

Perry's unbeaten 32 off 43 balls helped guide the Sixers to victory by the 19th over.
