Wingard pulls out of rules tour

Port Adelaide star Chad Wingard is out of the international rules tour because of a knee injury.

Fremantle small forward Hayden Ballantyne will take Wingard's place in the Australian squad for the November 21 Test against Ireland at Dublin's Croke Park.

Wingard has bone bruising on his right knee and the Power want him to be ready for pre-season training.

Port Adelaide high performance manager Darren Burgess said Wingard had been on light duties so he could go on the trip.

"But unfortunately it's still not where we'd like it to be," he said on the club website.

"He just needs more rest, so it's not appropriate for him to take part in the international rules."

Wingard added what was best long-term had to come first.

"It's very disappointing - obviously it would have been a great trip away and a good learning experience for me," he said.

"But I'm just going to have to play the cards I'm dealt and hopefully get that opportunity again one day."

Wingard has played 89 games for the Power since his 2012 debut and this year made his second All-Australian team.
