Beaches on the Gold Coast will remain off limits for the entire weekend and many on the Sunshine Coast could remain closed as ex-tropical cyclone Winston whips up huge waves and strong currents.

Rough conditions have caused a string of injuries, including dislocated shoulders and leg fractures, in recent days.

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) has pleaded with swimmers to stay out of the water as waves up to six metres high pound the coast.

The authority closed all beaches bar three on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday and announced those on the Gold Coast would remain shut on Sunday.

"It's not a decision that we've made lightly, but it was a necessary decision given how unstable and dangerous the current surf conditions are at the moment," SLSQ's Nathan Fife said.

Only three Sunshine Coast beaches - Noosa, Coolum and Bribie - are open and SLSQ is yet do decide whether it will be a similar scenario on Sunday.

Conditions have been rough for days, causing injuries and sparking rescues.

A woman broke her leg at the Gold Coast's Main Beach on Friday after she was knocked over by a powerful wave while walking on the sand.

In the past few days, surf life savers on the Sunshine Coast have carried out three rescues and seen six dislocated shoulders, seven back and neck-related injuries and a fractured leg.

The weather bureau has issued a severe weather warning for abnormally high tides and dangerous surf for the southern coast.

A severe marine wind warning is also current for waters off Queensland's southern coast and NSW's Byron coast.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Annabelle Ford said the worst of the rough conditions were expected on Saturday and would then begin to ease.

"The cyclone will be slowly moving northwest over the next few days and start to decay from Sunday," she told AAP.

Winston was about 630km east northeast of Brisbane on Saturday morning and likely to retain an intense wind structure throughout the day.

The chances of Winston reforming into a cyclone are now "very, very unlikely", Ms Ford said.
