NSW detectives are hoping fellow bushwalkers may be able to shed light on the death of a 19-year-old woman whose body was found at the bottom of a cliff in Sydney's Royal National Park.

The woman, named in media reports as Shazia Edah-Tally, was with her partner near the park's popular Wedding Cake Rock walking track on Wednesday when she went missing.

A body was found at the bottom of a cliff the following morning after a large-scale police search resumed at first light.

Police spent Thursday completing a delicate retrieval operation and said they were looking at the possibility the incident was the result of self-harm.

Detectives from Sutherland Local Area Command appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

"They are particularly appealing for anyone who may have been walking on the Coast Trail, Bundeena, from Beachcomber Avenue, to Wedding Cake Rock between 12pm and 4.45pm on Wednesday, and may have seen the 19-year-old woman," police said in a statement.

It's believed the pair had planned for a short walk near Wedding Cake Rock and were not carrying any camping gear, water or food.
