WNBL leaders Melbourne have big derby win

Melbourne remain atop the WNBL after a big win over local rivals Dandenong but Canberra are just behind then after two wins in the latest round.

Melbourne Boomers have consolidated top spot in the WNBL with a commanding 79-55 derby win over Dandenong on Sunday, but Canberra remain hot on their heels.

Import Lindsay Allen and Opal Stephanie Talbot scored 27 and 22 respectively for Melbourne and Cayla George tallied 10 points, 12 boards and three blocks.

Talbot was spectacularly efficient, making nine of 11 field goal attempts including four of six three-point shots, while Allen connected with three out of six long bombs and 11 of her 17 field goal tries.

The defeat completed a miserable round for finals-chasing Dandenong, who on Friday lost 87-60 away to second placed Canberra, scoring just 19 second half points.

The Caps' Kelsey Griiffn had an enormous game, stuffing the stats sheet with 24 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks, while Kia Nurse added 22 points..

Opals forward Griifin backed up with 21 points and eight board's in Sunday's 81-55 away thrashing of Townsville, who scored just five final quarter points and were hammered 55-39 on the boards.

However, the Caps suffered a blow on Sunday with guard Kristy Wallace reportedly injured in just her second game back from a knee reconstruction.

The Fire , who are still without injured captain and dominant frontcourt star Suzy Batkovic, lost 75-67 on Friday at Bendigo, who ended a six-game losing streak.

Perth snapped a three-game losing skid with an 88-84 home win over last-placed Sydney on Sunday.

Lynx forward Asia Taylor had a massive day against her former club, racking up 29 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Sydney showed some spirit to rebound from a 95-52 shellacking on Friday at Adelaide, who shored up fourth spot.
