Wobbly Wallabies not worried about spoon

The Wallabies are staring down the barrel of their first wooden spoon in the Rugby Championship if they slump to yet another defeat in Argentina.

Do-or-die time has arrived for the Wallabies but fullback Dane Haylett-Petty says players can't be sucked into fretting about where they end up in the Rugby Championship.

Australia are currently bottom of the four-team ladder following their 23-12 defeat to South Africa in Port Elizabeth.

Another loss to Argentina on Sunday morning (AEST) in Salta will guarantee they will finish in last place - as well as ensuring the pressure on coach Michael Cheika and his under-fire assistants will intensify even further.

The Wallabies have never dipped lower than third in the Rugby Championship since it was established six years ago, and on only two occasions between since 1998 did they end up with the wooden spoon in the Tri-Nations, the southern hemisphere tournament's predecessor.

It's a dire circumstance for Australian rugby, particularly given the next World Cup is less than a year away.

But Haylett-Petty - who has been one of the side's best performers throughout a lean 2018 campaign - said his teammates were not panicking.

"I don't think it's make or break," Haylett-Petty told reporters when asked about the importance of the Los Pumas clash.

"We're definitely not happy about (being bottom) and we've definitely come here to win.

"It's probably a bit of a trap to focus on 'we have to win, we have to win'.

"For us, we're not so much focusing on the outcome.

"I definitely try not to worry about the external noise and what's going on.

"It's probably easier being away from home and being in camp all together and being able to focus on each day and doing the things we need to do to be able to come out on the weekend and perform."

The Wallabies are training in Buenos Aires this week and will fly out to Salta later in the week.

Cheika will be forced into making at least two changes, with hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau (hamstring) and winger Jack Maddocks (finger) having flown home with injuries.

Tolu Latu has replaced Polota-Nau in the travelling squad while uncapped centre Billy Meakes is due to meet up with the rest of the squad later on Tuesday (AEST) to provide cover for Maddocks.

Marika Koroibete has been cleared to play after copping a concussion against the Springboks.
