A police search in Sydney has led to a woman being charged with possessing a prohibited pen gun.

A woman has been charged with possessing a prohibited pen gun after being stopped and searched by police in Sydney's southwest.

Police say the search in Macquarie Fields at about 10.20pm on Friday uncovered a pen gun about 10cm in length, ammunition, cannabis and other restricted substances.

The woman was arrested and charged with possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm, possessing ammunition without authority, possessing a prohibited drug and possessing a prescribed restricted substance.

The 39-year-old was granted conditional bail to appear before Campbelltown Local Court on Monday.
