A woman aged in her 40s and her nine-year-old son have been found dead in a house in Adelaide.

Police are not commenting how the tragedy happened but say they are not seeking anyone in relation to the deaths.

The bodies were found by police who went to the Glenelg North home late on Thursday night.

Concerns had first been raised by the woman's estranged partner during the afternoon when he couldn't make contact with her by phone.

That prompted police to visit the property once during the day and again at about 11pm.

"An investigation is continuing and it's in its infancy, however, it is believed there is no other person involved in these tragic circumstances," Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Overmeyer said at the scene on Friday morning.

Insp Overmeyer said the woman's partner was "not doing very well at all".

"These circumstances are tragic for anyone who is exposed to them and it's appropriate that we respect everybody, particularly the deceased, and we make sure we do a thorough job and prepare a proper report for the coroner," he said.

Readers seeking support and information about suicide prevention can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
