A Victorian mum remains in a critical condition in hospital, a day after a deer attack that killed her husband and left her seriously injured.

The man, named by media outlets as 46-year-old Paul McDonald, entered the stag's enclosure on Wednesday morning at Moyhu, near Wangaratta.

His wife Mandi and their son heard the attack and went to help. Ms McDonald was attacked when she entered the enclosure to help her husband, who died at the scene.

Ms McDonald was flown to Melbourne's Alfred Hospital. Her condition was still listed as critical on Thursday morning.

Victoria Police acting Senior Sergeant Paul Pursell said the deer was shot dead by officers at the scene to allow an ambulance officer to treat the couple safely.
