Labor leader Bill Shorten has been left red-faced after an Adelaide woman in a wheelchair manhandled him into a kiss on the lips.

Margo Carey spotted the opposition leader as he was walking through the city streets to meet locals flanked by a large media pack.

She briefly gave him a talking-to about tram access for people with a disability, before grabbing and flinging him across her motorised wheelchair.

"Now come on! Give us a kiss and a cuddle for the cameras!" she bellowed, almost lifting Mr Shorten off the ground and onto her lap.

"Good on you Margo," a blushing Mr Shorten replied.

"I think they need you playing for Collingwood I reckon."

But that wasn't enough for Margo, and she gleefully demanded Mr Shorten give her a "proper kiss".

Mr Shorten appeared to be leaning in for a kiss on the cheek but found Margo's lips instead.

"Oh!" the Labor leader replied in shock as Margo grabbed his neck.

Later, asked why she demanded a kiss from Mr Shorten, the 49 year-old said: "Because I'm an attention seeker."

Mr Shorten's wife Chloe was unfazed by the encounter, taking it in good humour.

"I don't blame her!" she said in a statement.

"I'm thrilled that people are so happy to meet Bill."
