Woman detained in Dominican Republic with $75k in stomach

Officials say they have arrested a woman at an airport in the Dominican Republic who had more than $A75,000 hidden in her stomach.

A woman has been arrested at an airport in the Dominican Republic carrying more than $US70,000 ($A75,737.08) in her stomach.

A spokesman for the National Drug Control Agency says the money was divided up among 16 capsules and the cash was likely tied to drug trafficking.

Spokesman Dario Medrano said on Friday the 40-year-old was arrested at the airport in the popular tourist district of Punta Cana after arriving on a flight from Brussels.

A further $US69,000 was found hidden inside her suitcase.

Her name has not been released.

Dominican authorities say it's the first time they have arrested someone who was smuggling money in their stomach.
