Detectives are struggling to determine how two people fell 10 metres from a Melbourne apartment complex, with a woman dying at the scene and a man hospitalised with serious injuries.

The pair plunged from the Smith Street apartment complex in Collingwood on Saturday before they were discovered about 11.30am.

Paramedics say the woman was dead when they arrived and the man was rushed to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

He suffered head and upper body injuries and remained in hospital on Saturday night in a stable condition.

The Nine Network reports he's 35 while the woman was aged in her 20s.

"They believe it was about 10 metres," an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said when asked about the fall.

Detectives are yet to determine how the pair fell and haven't ruled out self-harm.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the matter is suspicious, are yet to be determined," the spokeswoman said in a statement.

An apartment complex resident told AAP it was thought the couple had fallen from a top floor apartment.

They said a neighbour had heard a commotion about 3am but couldn't say if it was related to the incident later on Saturday morning.

The coroner is investigating.
