An 87-year-old Japanese woman in a wheelchair has died after being stung 150 times by giant hornets.

A swarm of hornets prevented a care worker accompanying the woman from helping her, while emergency personnel could not reach her immediately because they did not have protective gear with them.

The incident that happened on September 11 was made public by local officials in the city of Ozu on the island of Shikoku on Friday.

The woman was rushed to hospital after being attacked by the swarm for 50 minutes. She was pronounced dead the following day.

About 20 people die from hornet stings every year in Japan, broadcaster NHK reported.
