No motorist should resort to violence, police say, after a video emerged of a man punching a woman in the head during a road rage incident on NSW's Central Coast.

The footage, recorded on a dash cam and uploaded to Facebook, shows the man approaching the woman and assaulting her after she stepped out of a ute at an intersection at Lake Munmorah.

The attack occurred on Monday and the man who uploaded the video, Dwayne Pillidge, claimed the violence unfolded after the woman tossed items from her window at the man's car.

"I don't care what your reason, it is not OK to hit a woman," he said on Facebook.

Inspector Rod Peet said there was a clear assault shown in the footage and police were conducting a "holistic" investigation.

"It doesn't matter what happened in the lead up," he told Macquarie Radio.

"In front of members of the public, in front of children, in front of whoever's around, certainly the best way to resolve (an issue) is not to get out of your car and resort to violence."

Police had taken a statement from the woman and witnesses but were yet to speak with the man, Insp Peet said.
