Video has captured the moment a US police officer shot a woman, moments after she yelled "I'm pregnant".
The shooting was caught on camera on Monday night in the Texan town of Baytown after officers attempted to arrest the 44-year-old over outstanding warrants.
Lieutenant Steve Dorris of the Baytown Police Department told local media it was early days and an investigation was underway.
"It's a tragic event for everybody involved, of course, our hearts go out to the family of the deceased as well as our officer," Lieutenant Dorris said.
The woman has been identified by US media as Pamela Shantay Turner, a resident of the apartment complex where the shooting took place.
Ms Turner's family said she was a grandmother and had been on medication for schizophrenia, local media reported.
The lieutenant said the officer, who is yet to be identified, was patrolling an apartment complex when he spotted Ms Turner, who he'd dealt with before.
After approaching her, a "struggle ensued" causing the officer to use his Taser. Lt Dorris said the woman gained control of the stun gun, turning it back on the officer, forcing him to use his pistol and fire multiple rounds at the woman.
He said the woman was hit "at least" once and was declared dead at the scene.
In the video, shared widely on Snapchat and Facebook, the woman can be heard telling the officer "I'm actually walking to my house".
“You’re actually harassing me,” she said, before the two fall to the ground.
Shortly after, the woman can be heard yelling "I'm pregnant" before shots can be heard.
According to local media, the medical examiner confirmed that the woman was not pregnant.
Mr Dorris said police would like to speak to the person who filmed the video.
"It's unfortunate that someone takes a tragic incident like this and starts posting it to social media. It's extremely disrespectful to everybody involved but that's the day and age we live in with social media," he said.
The officer, an 11-year veteran of the police force, has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway, police said.
A small crowd gathered outside Baytown police station on Wednesday, holding signs with the phrase "black lives matter".
