A woman has thrown an object, reported to be a shoe, at Hillary Clinton during a speech in Las Vegas, but it missed and Clinton laughed off the incident, video footage shows.

The woman launched the projectile at the former secretary of state as she was addressing a meeting of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) on Thursday.

Clinton, the 66-year-old presumed frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, ducked as the object whisked past at head height to her left.

"Good thing she didn't play softball like I did," Clinton joked, drawing cheers from the audience at the Mandalay Bay hotel/casino, according to the video by KTNV.

"My goodness, I didn't know that solid waste management was so controversial."
