Penny Wong hasn't taken long to pick up the diplomatic skills needed for her new job as she tactfully avoided endorsing the "barking mad" label Labor leader Bill Shorten planted on US presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"Ultimately, these are decisions for the American people," the opposition's new foreign affairs spokeswoman told ABC radio on Wednesday, when asked if she agreed with her boss.

Labor would work to ensure the Australia-US relationship remained strong with whoever became the next US president, Senator Wong said as she gave a subtle plug for Democrat Hillary Clinton describing her as an "impressive woman".
