Woodside Petroleum says a joint venture in Myanmar has struck gas in the offshore Rakhine basin.

Woodside said it has intersected a gas column of around 129 meters at the Shwe Yee Htun-1 exploration well in Block A-6 in the Rakhine Basin.

"This discovery is an encouraging outcome for future exploration and appraisal activity in the area," Woodside chief executive Peter Coleman said. He said further analysis will be undertaken to understand the full potential of the strike.

Woodside, which is the joint operator, holds a 40 per cent stake in the A-6 block. Local energy firm MPRL E&P holds 20 per cent, while Total holds the remaining stake.
