Woolworths will stop selling a hat that depicts a map of Australia which fails to include Tasmania after a wave of online ridicule.

The oversight has attracted criticism on social media for supermarket giant, with the navy blue baseball-style cap, including the Union Jack and southern cross, being sold as part of Australia Day merchandise.

"Woolworths is aware of the issue and in the process of withdrawing the product from our supermarket shelves," the company said.

It continues a bad week for the company, which announced it is abandoning its loss-making local home improvement venture, leaving 8500 staff in limbo.
