Forest workers are clearing trees and shrubs from a site in southwestern Poland under which two explorers claim there is a secret tunnel and a Nazi train, possibly containing armaments and precious minerals.

The two explorers claim they have located a hidden World War II tunnel with a Nazi armoured train in it and local authorities in the city of Walbrzych take the information seriously.

On Tuesday, workers were removing vegetation from the indicated site, after military experts said it had to be cleared before they could inspect it.

The two explorers have previously identified themselves as Piotr Koper, a Pole, and German national Andreas Richter.

"We have irrefutable evidence it exists," Koper told Poland's public broadcaster earlier this month, adding that "we aren't responsible for the media circus surrounding the train".

He insisted that evidence the pair had presented confidentially to local authorities on August 18 had later been leaked to the media.

The men, who under Polish law are entitled to a 10 per cent finder's fee, say they have enough funding to independently excavate the train and its presumed treasures.

They've vowed to use part of the finder's fee earned from the discovery to set up a museum at the site.
