Finance Minister Mathias Cormann insists the government is working towards a May 10 budget as scheduled and any other date is "hypothetical".
Speculation was rife last week that the budget would be brought forward to May 3 to enable Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to call a double dissolution for a July 2 election.
"All of us are working towards delivering the budget in the usual timetable on the second Tuesday in May," Senator Cormann told Sky News on Sunday.
The minister also played down the significance of the recent strength in the iron ore price on the budget bottom line, saying there were a lot of moving parts, "up and down".
The iron price spiked above $US60 per tonne at one stage last week, well over the $US39 per tonne assumed in the budget, suggesting increased government revenue from tax receipts from miners.
"The inclination of the government is to continue to repair the budget ... but don't make an assumption because there has been a few days of higher than anticipated iron prices that that necessarily has a positive net effect on revenue," he said.
