Australia's two-time world champion Tyler Wright breathed new life into her title defence but American Lakey Peterson is the new frontrunner after winning the World Surf League event in Bali.

Peterson overtook Australian Stephanie Gilmore to top the standings when she defeated Wright in Sunday's final at the Keramas break.

Wright had not got past the quarter-finals previously in 2017, but returned to her best in Bali.

Wright battled until the dying seconds of the decider and got close with a combined wave total of 13.74, but Peterson's early score of 14.33 secured the win.

The result was enough to move Wright up to fourth place in the standings on 23,460 points, behind Peterson (35,630), Gilmore (34,235) and Brazil's Tatiana West-Webb (26,105).

"It's been a great contest, we've had great waves and the level of surfing has been really high," Wright said.

"I've been watching Lakey all week and I knew she would be tough to beat.

"She got that 8.33 early in the final and the waves slowed down and I couldn't catch her."

Peterson made only two final appearances last year and lost both but her form has gone to another level in 2018, reaching three finals for two wins from four completed events.

"I'm over the moon," said Peterson. "This is just so crazy. Seeing Steph (Gilmore) win in Brasil really lit a fire in me, and I came here and knew what I had to do.

"I've just been keeping calm all week. This is a really long year, so it's been fun to be a part of it so far."
