Australia's Tyler Wright has won the World Surf League season opener on the Gold Coast.

The 21-year-old scored 14.67 points out of 20 in Wednesday's Roxy Pro final at Snapper Rocks, beating American Courtney Conlogue by 3.73 points in a dominant display.

Wright's win is her second title win on the Gold Coast, following her 2013 triumph.

It's the perfect start to the year for the NSW surfer, who will now take the world No.1 ranking into the second WSL tour stop at Bells Beach in Victoria.

Wright, who eliminated defending world and event champion Carissa Moore earlier on Wednesday to reach the final, started the decider with a bang.

A six-point ride and a 5.3 gave her an early lead over 2015 championship runner-up Conlogue, which she didn't relinquish.

Wright extended her lead later in the 35-minute heat when she scored an 8.17 and then a 6.50.

Conlogue was unable to better two five-point rides she picked up early in the heat.

In addition to the top ranking, Wright picks up 10,000 ranking points and $60,000 in cash for her win.
