Wu takes world series diving bronze

Australia's Melissa Wu showed her Olympic promise on Sunday by winning bronze in the platform final at a world series diving event in Beijing.

Australian diver Melissa Wu has once again underlined her Olympic medal potential with a hard-fought bronze medal at the World Series diving event at Beijing.

Wu finished strongly in the women's platform final to grab bronze behind Chinese pair, Yajie Si and Qian Ren.

Last month Wu had a similar result at the World Cup event in Rio, picking up bronze behind two highly-rated Chinese divers.

The 23-year-old from Sydney held her nerve in a hotly-contested race for the bronze, seeing off challenges from Canada's Meaghan Benfeito and Great Britain's Tonia Couch.

Wu finished on 342.10, seven points ahead of Benfeito but more than 35 points behind Ren in the silver medal position.

In 2008 16-year-old Wu won silver in the women's platform synchro final at the same Beijing venue, her only Olympic medal to date.

But her form leading into the Australian Olympic selection trials is some of the best in her career.

Wu's bronze medal was the highlight for Australian at the World Series, although teenager Maddison Keeney again showed flashes of her ability before a no dive ruled her out of the medals in the three-metre springboard final.
