Wu wins platform synchro diving final

Triple Olympian Melissa Wu and Taneka Kovchenko have won gold in the women's platform synchro diving final in Sydney, ahead of the world titles in Hungary.

Triple Olympian Melissa Wu has won the women's platform synchro final with Taneka Kovchenko at the aquatics world championships selection trials in Sydney.

Wu, who has won three world championship synchro medals since debuting in 2007, has been in strong form this year, winning silver in the platform final at last month's world series event in Canada.

Wu and South Australian Kovchenko on Wednesday finished on 331.68 points, well ahead of Emily Meaney and Brittany O'Brien on 279.18.

It's Wu's first major event with Kovchenko, after pairing with O'Brien at the Rio Games and making the semi-finals.

The 25-year-old is in line for her sixth world titles with the final squad for Budapest to be announced later this week.

Rio Olympian Kevin Chavez and South Australian Mathew Carter have won a close men's springboard synchro final in Sydney, the final margin less than two points.

Chavez and Carter just held on to take gold in the men's thre-metre synchro, withstanding a late challenge by two-time Olympian James Conner and Kurtis Mathews.

Chavez and Carter finished on 410.97 points, with Connor and Mathews on 409.23.

Four finals will be contested at Homebush on Thursday, including the women's platform, men's three-metre and women's one-metre.

The mixed three-metre synchro, which has been added this year to the world championships program, will also be contested.
