Twenty-one Australian Second World War veterans are en route to Egypt to retrace their steps on the battlefield at El Alamein.

The Allied victory in the desert of North Africa was one of the turning points of the war.

Today, the veterans began their journey at Sydney's Anzac War Memorial in Hyde Park.
