Police have extensively investigated the discovery of the remains of a young girl on a South Australian freeway but they're yet to be identified.

The identity of a young girl whose remains were discovered 2km outside a rural South Australia town remains a mystery despite extensive investigations.

About 430 homes have been visited, 380 cars stopped and thousands of people spoken to under the investigation, which has ruled out 135 children considered potential victims, police say.

In late July a motorist found a suitcase containing ragged clothing and other items alongside the bones of the girl, who was aged between two-and-a-half to four years, dumped by the side of Karoonda Highway outside Wynarka, east of Adelaide.

WYNARKA GIRL

* Likely born 2005-06

* Caucasian with fair hair

* Killed at another location after 2007

* Remains found dumped about 2km from Wynarka on July 14.
