Nick Xenophon has hit out at his political opponents for "premature erection" of campaign posters in South Australian electorates.

On the eve of the federal election being called, Mr Xenophon issued a statement alleging SA Liberals Industry Minister Christopher Pyne, Hindmarsh MP Matt Williams and Boothby candidate Nicolle Flint already had election posters up.
He also said Labor and The Greens had put up posters early.

Mr Xenophon said he would be asking councils to enforce the rules and to insist on those posters put up prematurely taken down and penalties applied.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will visit Governor-General Peter Cosgrove later on Sunday to launch the nation on a protracted election campaign culminating with a July 2 poll.

Mr Turnbull has promised this will be a double dissolution election, both houses of parliament dissolved and all 150 House of Representatives seats and 76 Senate places up for election.
