It was a long, and at times, tense race to the White House between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama.

On the big day itself, there were concerns over voting glitches and long queues in some parts of the US. Superstorm Sandy also made voting difficult, with dozens of polling stations in New Jersey and New York forced to relocate. But on the positive side, voter turnout appears high in many parts of the country.

When Obama was eventually re-elected, his "four more years" tweet became the most popular tweet of all time.
