Young people who've abused other children say in some cases pornography triggered their behaviour, a new Melbourne study has revealed.

Fourteen young people in Victoria who sexually abused children were interviewed for the Melbourne University study released on Thursday.

Some told researchers if they hadn't viewed pornography their abusive behaviour may have been reduced or eliminated altogether.

"They thought that it (pornography) played almost a causative role in the behaviour," the policy paper's lead author, Gemma McKibbin, told AAP on Thursday.
