Young Cats stepped up in AFL: coach

Geelong coach Chris Scott was thrilled with how some of his AFL side's most inexperienced players stepped up when the game was to be won against Sydney.

A handful of Geelong's inexperienced players stood up under immense pressure during a 12-point win over Sydney, but none more so than Tim Kelly.

Kelly entered the SCG as one of five Cats to have debuted this year.

The West Australian showed immense composure and class, especially when the game was on the line.

A set shot from Kelly pushed Geelong's lead out to six points late in the final quarter, when the inaccurate visitors were threatening to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Soon after, Kelly took possession of the ball in the forward line with approximately four minutes remaining.

The 23-year-old opted against handballing to Gary Ablett, owning the moment and snapping the sealer from a tricky position.

"He was fantastic. He's been really good for us all year, even last week when the game was on the line in the last quarter, he was really dominant," Scott said.

"On a night where it was quite difficult to be clean because of slippery conditions, he looked as strong and stable with ball in hand as any."

Scott praised Kelly and fellow youngsters Quinton Narkle and Brandan Parfitt for helping his side dominate the stoppages.

"It wasn't just our senior players," he said.

"I don't think anybody would say we're the best stoppage team in the competition, but that doesn't mean we can't be in a couple of weeks."

The Cats' back six also enhanced their reputation as the most miserly defence in the league, restricting Sydney to 9.5 (59).

"They did a great job and we didn't always support them with extra numbers," Scott said.

"They've been fantastic for us all year. It's a different look for us.

"At the bookends of the ground we're flooded with inexperienced: five of our seven forwards were first or second year players.

"The guys in the back end haven't played a whole heap of footy, so it's great for them to play against a really good team and stand up under pressure."

The Cats, who shored up their spot in the top eight with the win, face the Crows at Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

"We are backing in our system that if we can get all the pieces of the puzzle in shape, that we can play good enough footy to beat anybody," Scott said.

"Adelaide in Adelaide is a big challenge as well. It's a tough part of the draw."
