Young guns hold seats for Labor in SA

Two of Labor's rising stars have been elected to the SA parliament in two seats held by party heavyweights, maintaining the status quo in the lower house.

Labor has completed a changing of the guard in South Australia with two heavyweights in the party replaced in state parliament by two rising stars.

The ALP has claimed victory in two by-elections with SA Unions boss Joe Szakacs taking over from former premier Jay Weatherill as the member for Cheltenham and lawyer Andrea Michaels winning Enfield, previously held by former deputy premier John Rau.

At the close of counting on Saturday, Mr Szakacs had secured a near 10 per cent swing and Ms Michaels had increased Labor's margin by more than four per cent.

Absentee and postal votes are still outstanding, but with the Liberal Party not running in either seat, the results are not in doubt.

Both Mr Szakacs and Ms Michaels say cuts to government services, including bus routes, were key issues during the by-election campaigns and have pledged to continue to fight those cuts in state parliament.

Mr Weatherill and Mr Rau announced their retirement from politics late last year, just months after being returned at the 2018 state election. Labor lost government in the election.

The by-election results maintain the status quo in parliament's House of Assembly, with the Liberal government holding 25 seats, Labor 19 and independents three.
