Young Lions learning their AFL lessons

While winless since late last season, Brisbane are showing signs of life ahead of Saturday night's game against the Western Bulldogs.

Brisbane's previous two Melbourne games this season have taught them plenty about how to break their AFL drought on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium.

The Lions are on a nine-game run of losses going back to round 22 last season and badly need a win over the Western Bulldogs to maintain morale.

But they have impressed several times this season and last Sunday, they lost to Collingwood by only seven points in an entertaining clash.

That was in stark contrast to their most recent trip to Melbourne, their worst performance under coach Chris Fagan, when reigning premiers Richmond mauled Brisbane by 93 points in round four and kept them to just two goals.

"The way they buy into the way they want to play - their pressure is through the roof and it's better than any other team I've played against," said Lions defender Darcy Gardiner.

He added the young Lions have kept an eye in the in-form Tigers.

"We have watched a little bit of them over the last couple of weeks, to dig out parts of their game," Gardiner said.

"That closing pressure - getting into people's faces, just pressing forward and not hesitating.

"That's probably something we learned the most of that game, that they did really well and we haven't been doing so well probably in the first seven games."

Likewise, Brisbane took plenty from their previous match at Etihad Stadium, when St Kilda beat them in round one by 25 points.

Coach Chris Fagan said the Saints torched them on turnovers under the stadium roof and Gardiner added it was a good lesson in being patient.

"Being a young team, when we get the ball we want to play on , go fast all the time," he said.

"As we've discovered, there are different ways of ball movement.

"It will open up as guys fatigue and we can move the ball a bit more smart - just not go 100 per cent all the time."

For a 0-7 team, Brisbane are far from a basket case - but they badly need a win.

"Obviously it's frustrating, but we've had a lot of what you could say are promising results and improvements in areas where we've wanted them," Gardiner said.

The Bulldogs have named Marcus Bontempelli, after the star onballer was a late withdrawal from last week's narrow win over Gold Coast with a hip injury.
