Young NSW kids continue to get flu jab

Children under five will still get the flu shot despite a shortage of Commonwealth-supplied vaccines but supplies for adults are constrained, NSW Health says.

Babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers in NSW will continue to get the flu vaccine despite a national shortage of Commonwealth-supplied vaccines, the state's health department says.

Chief health officer Kerry Chant says the state government has separately purchased the vaccine for healthcare workers and children aged under five.

While cases of influenza in NSW remain low, and there's no indication of an early start to the flu season, Dr Chant says "we shouldn't be complacent".

"We hope parents and carers will vaccinate children aged from six months to under five years, as we have secured supply of vaccine for this group," she said in a statement on Thursday.

Supplies for adults were very constrained under the National Immunisation Program - which is provided by the federal government - but anyone who hasn't had the jab should still call their GP or pharmacy to check stock, she said.

NSW Health is working with the federal health department to manage vaccine supplies under the program, with additional stock from overseas expected within a fortnight.
