Young veterans step up for Anzac Day march

About 100 WWII veterans will be marching alongside thousands of younger RSL members stepping forward to play a role in Anzac Day commemorations in Sydney.

Younger RSL members are being encouraged to attend Anzac Day marches across NSW as the number of older WWII veterans dwindles.

About 100 WWII diggers will be scattered throughout Tuesday's Anzac Day march in Sydney, according to RSL NSW president John Haines.

"We still get a fair roll-up, they're very obstinate - they want to march same as the Korean War guys," he told AAP.

"Mind you, they'll probably go straight home after the march whereas in previous days they'd probably kick on to some hotel and have a couple of beers with their mates."

They'll be joined by tens of thousands of people who are expected to start the day at the Cenotaph in Martin Place for the 4.15am Dawn Service marking 102 years since Anzac troops landed at Gallipoli.

The 9am march proceeds south along Elizabeth Street - instead of the usual George Street route - for the second year, finishing at the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park for the 12.30pm commemoration service.

Extra buses and trains will run across the Sydney network and motorists are advised to avoid the city, with road closures in place from 3am.

Superintendent Mark Walton says a highly visible police presence will ensure public safety in the Sydney CBD.

"As this year's Anzac Day falls on a Tuesday, we are anticipating some celebrations will stretch over from the weekend so remember the reasons for commemorating this day and act in the true Anzac spirit - look out for your mates," he said in a statement.

The Royal Australian Air Force will conduct a series of flypasts near Sydney, starting with a Hercules aircraft over Windsor and Riverstone at 6.25am then Lawson and Lithgow from 10.50am.

A Hawk aircraft will fly past Freshwater at 9am then head south to the Sydney CBD and finish at Kenthurst around 9.30am.

Official commemorations will conclude with a sunset service back at the Cenotaph in Martin Place at 5pm.
