Tonight's $70 million Powerball is the second highest jackpot in Australian lotto history. If you've bought a ticket, then the chance of you winning on a standard 12 game entry is 1 in 6.39 million.
There's a greater chance of being struck by lightning, which the US National Weather Service puts at 1 in 12,000.
But some people do win. The record for the highest guaranteed jackpot for lotto games in Australia is the $100 million Oz Lotto draw which took place on Melbourne Cup day 2012.

Elissa Lewis, from Tatts Lotteries says "There was so much interest in the draw that the division one prize pool was boosted to a colossal $111.9 million."
In the end, the jackpot was shared by four winning entries, with one in Queensland, one in the ACT, and two in Victoria. One of the Victorian entries was split between 80 members of a syndicate who each received $349,913.
The record for the largest Powerball jackpot in Australia is $80 million which occurred on July 30 2009. Two winning entries from Victoria and New South Wales shared the division one prize and claimed $40 million each.

As for the lotto hotspots around the country, Elissa Lewis says some locations have seen more than one winning entry this year.
"To date in 2014, some of these include the far-north region in Queensland around Cairns," she said.
"In NSW the biggest win in 2014 has been sold in Winston Hills. In Victoria, Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing have sold three division one winning entries."
"Mt Gambier in South Australia has sold three division one winning entres to date in 2014. And Lotterywest in WA says Cloverdale, Morley and Mandura are proving to be the lotto hotspots across the metropolitain area."
For every winner though, there are thousands, if not millions of losers.

Gaming and lottery company, Tatts Group, which operates many lotteries in Australia, isn't one of those losers though. Its shares have increased 73 per cent over the past three years.
