Australian rower Cormac Kennedy-Leverett has won bronze for Australia in the men's 500m single sculls at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.

Kennedy-Leverett flew home in one minute 33.84 seconds to finish third behind gold medallist Ivan Tyshchenko from Ukraine and Belarussian Ivan Bryzna.

The Queensland rower was thrilled to medal in front of a packed crowd in the modified 500m format.

"I'm really happy with that performance, I raced some awesome guys," Kennedy-Leverett said.

"I put an emphasis on enjoying the process of putting my best down each time and trying to make sure I come away from this event happy, and I really am."

The Buenos Aires rowing competition provided a unique racing experience, with the traditional 2000m course replaced with a 500m sprint including a bridge packed with fans 150m from the finish line.

"There's nothing like rowing under a bridge with spectators three metres above your head screaming for you," Kennedy-Leverett said.

"To be honest it was pretty daunting to begin with, but I really got around that atmosphere."

The Australian women's 3x3 basketball team of Rosie Deegan, Alexandra Fowler, Sara-Rose Smith and Ruby Porter opened their campaign with an 11-7 win over the Netherlands and backed up to beat the Czech Republic 15-11.

Australian golfers Grace Kim and Karl Villips sit atop the leaderboard in the women's and men's competitions respectively with one round to play.

Kim shot the day's best score of one-under 69 in the women's strokeplay, drawing level with overnight leader Alessia Nobilio of Italy.

Vilips shot a 68 to take the men's outright lead, one shot clear of American Ashkay Bhatia.
