Yowie chocolates - Australia's answer to Kinder Surprise - are returning to local shops for the first time after their relaunch in the United States three years ago.
The first containers of the chocolate Yowies, which encase toy animals, will begin selling at Australian supermarkets by the end of February, Perth-based Yowie Group announced on Monday.
"Australia was a logical choice to begin our expansion outside of the US because of strong residual brand awareness and affinity for the product," Yowie chief executive Bert Alfonso said in a statement.
The Yowie confectionary, originally launched in Australia and New Zealand in 1995 by Cadbury and Kidcorp, was one of the most popular sweets in Australia, selling 65 million units worth more than $100 million in sales in one year.
The brand features a cast of characters created by best-selling authors Bryce Courtenay and Geoff Pike.
However, a disagreement between Cadbury and the Yowie creators over the rights led to the chocolates being pulled from production during the early 2000s.
The Yowie group secured the rights to the chocolates in 2012 and currently sells the sweets in Walmart supermarkets across the US.
