Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged Barack Obama to intervene and stop a Florida church carrying out a planned Koran burning.

Presidential spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had written to the US president to express his concerns.

"In the letter, President Yudhoyono wrote that Indonesia and the US are building or bridging relations between the Western world and Islam. If the Koran burning occurs, then those efforts will be useless," he said.

"There is a deep concern over the planned Koran burning ceremony as it could spark conflict among religions," Faizasyah said.

Florida's Dove World Outreach Center is planning to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York.

Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim-majority country.
