A former president of the NSW Liberal party has warned against introducing plebiscites for preselections.

Trent Zimmerman, now a federal MP, writes in Fairfax Media on Thursday there is cause for caution with plebiscites which could create a risk of branch stacking.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott has called for a plebiscite-style system for preselection, warning corruption could fester without reform .
