Two days after a Florida jury found George Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the death of Martin Trayvon, Zimmerman's parents have given their first television interview.
Gladys and Robert Zimmerman Senior told ABC World News that if they had the chance, they would tell Trayvon Martin's parents they are very sorry about what happened the night their son fatally shot Trayvon Martin.
"We are deeply sorry," said Gladys Zimmerman.
But the parents insist their son is not a racist.
Mostly peaceful protests have been held across the country since the not-guilty verdict was announced.
George Zimmerman's mother said she found the protestshave been "hurtful".
"This is America, and we went through all of this with the judicial system," Gladys Zimmerman said. "They wanted an arrest for my son. They got an arrest. Now lets, you know, find a verdict ... now they have a verdict. ... He went through the whole process they were pushing for, and now they are not happy with the verdict, and I pray. I pray for them, for God to touch their heart."
Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer, was acquitted last Saturday by an all-female jury in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Martin last year.
