Asbestos has been found near playgrounds at a Brisbane primary school, which is putting up barriers to protect students from exposure.

Fibres were reportedly found on a child at Holland Park State School, which says recent findings of asbestos originated from embankments that edge its playgrounds.

A post on the school's Facebook page, on behalf of principal Tony Gribbin, said those embankments had become eroded after heavy rain and were now being barricaded and cleaned.

"These embankments have been barricaded ... (and) given that we have had a number of incidents this year so far, I have decided to take the additional precaution of barricading all embankments even if they have been professionally cleaned," the statement said.

An unnamed parent has told News Corp her six-year-old child had undergone blood tests after she and a friend found material believed to contain asbestos.

A Department of Education and Training spokesman said the school had acted immediately to ensure the safety of all students following the asbestos discovery.

The department had engaged an engineering firm to investigate and report on asbestos management at the school, he said.

A chief health advisor was also attending the school to address any concerns held by school staff and parents, he added.
