Assisted dying laws have passed Victoria's lower house. Here's a look at which other countries allow the practice.
UNITED STATES
Physician-assisted dying for people with six months or less to live was first made legal for adults in 1994 in Oregon, followed by Washington, Montana, Vermont, California, District of Colombia and Colorado. Those aged over 18 years must be residents of those states and make three requests to their doctor in oral and written form.
SWITZERLAND
Switzerland is the only country that allows foreign adults over 18 the right to die as long as the motives are not selfish. But those who assist a person out of "selfish motives" face jail time.
GERMANY
Legislation introduced in 2015 made it legal for adults to end their lives. But those trying to profit from the practice face up to three years jail.
CANADA
Since 2016 only Canadians with a fatal condition over 18 and without a mental illness can end their lives. The request has to be written and signed by two witnesses.
NORTHERN TERRITORY, AUSTRALIA
The Rights of the Terminally Ill Act in 1995 permitted physician-assisted suicide, but was overturned by federal parliament the following year.
ASSISTED DYING v EUTHANASIA
* In assisted dying, a physician prescribes the medicine but the patient takes it him or herself.
* Euthanasia allows for a third party to administer the lethal dose and is legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia and Luxembourg.
