Plastic glasses across the country have been raised to toast Thomas W.C Angove, the Australian inventor of the wine cask, who died aged 92.

The winemaker was head of South Australia's Angove Family Winery, one of the oldest family-owned wineries in Australia.

The company was established in Adelaide in 1886, and Mr Angove became Managing Director in 1947. He handed over the reigns of the company in 1983.

In 1965 the winemaker invented the Bag in Box or cask wine, allegedly after seeing paintings of ancient Greek gods drinking from goatskin bags.

The soft, flexible bag became one of the most popular ways of packaging the alcoholic beverage due to its easy transportation and storage.

Mr Angove was awarded the order of Australia in 1994 for services to the wine industry.

He died yesterday in a nursing home in Renmark, South Australia.
