Australia need to find their ODI brand

WA batsman Marcus Stoinis says Australia's bid to become a more aggressive batting side has resulted in several recent batting collapses in England.

Marcus Stoinis says Australia need to discover the brand of cricket that suits them best ahead of the 2019 ODI World Cup in England.

The WA allrounder has been included in Australia's 14-man squad for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, starting in Perth on November 4.

The series will form an important part of Australia's World Cup preparations, especially following their embarrassing 5-0 series defeat in England earlier this year.

They have lost 16 of their past 18 ODIs - an astonishing record for a country with a glittering one-day history.

The explosion of Twenty20 cricket has resulted in a significant increase in ODI totals - an aggressive style Australia has struggled to adapt to.

Stoinis said it was important for Australia to find the right balance.

"I think that (aggressive approach to batting) is something that caught us off guard a little bit in England," he said.

"It's something we spoke about and tried to implement but it's a hard switch to flick like that and it led to a few batting collapses.

"We need to find that balance. There's definitely going to be a brand of cricket that we're going to have to figure out that we want to play for the World Cup. So that may be the start of it now."

Stoinis was disappointed to miss out on the T20 squad for the current series in the UAE.

But he will be aiming to score bulk runs in the ODI arena in a bid to keep his spot ahead of the World Cup.

Stoinis averages 45.85 in ODI ranks but will be aiming to make up for his poor series in England when he scored just 76 across five innings.

Five players in the ODI squad play for Western Australia and there would have been more if Mitch Marsh and Andrew Tye had been included.
