Australia not vetting Myanmar soldiers

Australia is not vetting Myanmar military officers taking part in a training program, to ensure they have not been accused of human rights abuses.

Defence does not perform checks on Myanmar military officers undertaking Australian training to ensure they have not been accused of human rights abuses in Rakhine State.

Under questioning from Labor's Penny Wong, Defence secretary Greg Moriarty has confirmed the Myanmar officers are not vetted, as the training is about human rights and professionalisation of the military.

"At the moment, the Department of Defence does not have a vetting procedure in place in relation to our activities with Myanmar," Mr Moriarty told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra on Wednesday.
