Australian dies in Nepal rafting accident

An Australian tourist has died on the Karnali River in Nepal after his raft capsized, police say.

A 39-year-old Australian tourist has died after his raft capsized on a river in northwestern Nepal, police say.

The man and four of his fellow rafters had arrived in Triveni on the Karnali River on Thursday when the accident happened, Bhim Rawat, a police officer in Kalikot district said.

He said the Australian's body was being airlifted to Kathmandu on Friday.

In December last year, a 24-year-old French tourist died in a similar accident during a week-long rafting trip on the Karnali River.

The Karnali River, Nepal's longest, originates on the Chinese border and tumbles down rugged hills and dense forest before entering India.
