A social media post claims that the man known as Abu Jihad al Australi, who had “fought on the front lines”, had been killed.

News Corp reports the man may have been former Melbourne university student Suhan Rahman, but SBS has not been able to independently verify these reports.

The 23-year-old, of Roxburgh Park in Melbourne's north, travelled to Syria last year and has posted pictures of himself with notorious Sydney extremist Mohamed Elomar.

Rahman made headlines in January, when he urged young Australians to "spill blood" and "let the heads fly and blood flow".
